Finnish nature photographer Eeva Mäkinen has spent fifteen years behind the camera, with the past decade dedicated entirely to her craft as a full-time photographer. Based in Ruka, Kuusamo, she works predominantly across northern Finland, where the landscape shifts dramatically through the seasons and the light carries a quality rarely found elsewhere.

I spend time scouting unique locations and working with natural light to create landscapes that feel soft, dreamlike, and genuinely alive.

Nikon was my very first camera, recommended by people who really knew birds and light. That trust has only grown over fifteen years.

Eeva Mäkinen's approach to photography is rooted in patience and presence. She works exclusively with natural light, carefully scouting locations before she ever raises her camera, allowing the environment to guide the image rather than forcing a result. This philosophy extends into her editing, where she has developed her own custom preset, Winter Hues, designed specifically to enhance the dreamy pink tones that define northern Finnish winter landscapes.

Her relationship with Nikon began in 2009 when her first camera was recommended to her by bird experts, a choice she has never reconsidered. By 2017 that relationship became collaborative when Nikon first reached out, and she has since been part of the Nikon talent and creator programs. Today she uses the Nikon Z 8, the Nikon Z 6III, and the Nikon Z R, working across a full range of NIKKOR Z lenses. For still images she frequently reaches for the NIKKOR Z 70–200mm f/2.8 S, which she considers her favorite for composing precisely within vast northern landscapes. For video in low winter light, the NIKKOR Z 35mm f/1.2 S has become an essential tool.
