Here’s our five-step guide for embracing the retro chic – plus the Zf gets a big firmware update for even more creativity

Looking to evoke nostalgia in your film? You wouldn’t be the only one. The ‘Retro Revolution’ – think film grain, warm tones and soft focus – is taking the creative world by storm. More than ever videographers and photographers are ditching the digital perfection. If you’re looking to add that retro spark, here’s our five-step guide.

1. Embrace the silver

Inspired by the Nikon FM2, the Nikon Zf combines Z series tech with an analogue camera design. Now available in silver body colour as well as black, the Zf is a classic retro camera with brass control dials which age beautifully over time and used to create a patina personal to your touch. Plus pick from seven faux leather limited edition skin colours including teal blue and moss green.

2. Evoke nostalgia with Film Grain

A new feature with the Nikon Zf v.3.00 firmware update, Film Grain adds a natural-looking grain effect to stills and video with image processing in the camera. The intensity of the grain can be fine-tuned in six steps and the size in three. The appearance of gain changes with each shot to replicate the analogue days of film so no two images will ever be the same.

3. Add a retro film look with Imaging Recipes

New to colour grading? If you have your heart set on a certain film look, check out Nikon Imaging Cloud’s Recipes, created by Nikon Creators and Ambassadors. Whether you prefer Kimura Hinami’s Faded Blue Film, Yomowasa’s sepia-film-like Café Cat recipe or Francois Lamoureux’s soft vintage highlights in Vibrant 2383, update the Zf’s firmware and you’ll be able to add new Picture Controls to your camera easily. Use the Film Grain on top of recipes to make your stills or video even more unique.

4. Tweak your Picture Controls in NX Studio

Want to take your retro film look even further? Refine the details of your recipe’s colours and looks via Flexible Colour in Nikon’s free editing software NX Studio. Flexible Colour allows you to create your own recipes to store on your camera for instantly uploadable JPEGs that matches the mood you want.

5. Go monochrome!

Black and white often enhances storytelling, evokes different perspectives and heightens emotions. With a dedicated monochrome switch, changing to black and white on the Zf has never been easier. The Zf’s mono ‘look’ comes in three flavours, from a neutral feel (monochrome), through a soft contrast look (flat monochrome), all the way into a starker, classic film-like style (deep tone monochrome). The camera will also keep a colour version of the file too, so you’re spoilt for choice.

Updates from the new Nikon firmware update

There are over 20 new additions to the Zf thanks to the free v.3.00 firmware update – let’s take a deeper look.

  • More support for vertical videos. As camera orientation can now be recorded in the video metadata, editing software and smartphones will recognise the files are vertical.
  • Filming video? Control Exposure compensation and ISO via the command dial. As there’s now no need to press the Fn button, it’s easier to hold the camera steady.
  • 9:16 and 4:3 photo grids. Frame your scenes when filming vertical videos with the new photo grids.
  • Customise your shutter sounds. Select whether the camera makes an electronic shutter sound during high-speed frame capture or pixel shift shooting. The electronic shutter sound value can also be adjusted.
  • Stream via USB. Live stream to your followers by setting USB in the network menu.
  • Try Pixel Shift Shooting. Options can now be set when the self-timer mode is selected.
  • Capture every moment with Pre-Release Capture. First released in a firmware update to the flagship Z9, Pre-Release Capture saves images as you half depress the shutter button.
